After returning in to the village of Shadbagh and the warlord who now runs it from behind his walled compound, Hosseini again switches the narration to the viewpoint of Markos, who recounts his childhood and coming of age on the island of Tinos.
The author adeptly bookends the narrative with the central plot book review help and the mountains echoed involving Pari and Abdullah. However, the Markos thread derails much of the momentum, and Hosseini struggles to pull us back in before the heartwarming closing pages remind us why the author has attracted such an ardent following.

T here is a bland, almost corporate flavour to the title of Khaled Hosseini 's third book, suggesting a large but windy Afghan epic. Its narrative wares are clearly advertised in the book-jacket blurb to reassure his tens of millions of worldwide readers that they will be getting the brand they want.

Although his bestselling debut novel The Kite Runner and its follow-up A Thousand Splendid Suns were widely praised for their emotional intensity and storytelling sweep, many readers felt the endings of both books were jarringly contrived.
