Do you work with people or animals? What is a typical day like? Do you enjoy it? Is it high stress? Are you burning out?

From an old comment of mine: Like one book, but pretty interesting. I'm not a grad student in neuroscience specifically, but many of what is research like peers are, and in most ways, their experiences what is research like very similar to mine. If you're thinking about a career in science, there are a number of different general tracks you can take after grad school Academia Top-tier Research University: You're the PI of a lab, and you typically spend very little time doing benchwork.
You operate on a higher plane, coming up with ideas, applying for grants, and schmoozing your peers. Stakes are high, and a failure to secure funding will likely mean that you're looking for another job after what is research like burn through your start-up money. The actual science gets done by what is research like grad students and postdocs.

Please allow me to introduce myself, I am Dr Kayleigh Dodd, once a hard working, enthusiastic young science graduate preparing myself for an illustrious and distinguished career in medical research. Five years on, my job hangs by a thread, my future somewhat questionable and the best thing that's happened to me this year was a fortuitous meeting with Dr Dean Burnett leading to this very outburst of frustration. I may be exaggerating ever so slightly.
